INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

Mission: Koers promotes the development of Christian scholarship/science in all fields of science and publishes original (mainly reflective) research contributions with an integrated worldview as foundation. We provide a platform for authors to engage constructively and critically with Christian scholarly/scientific points of view in all fields of science.

Scope: Koers is an influential, frequently cited, accredited peer reviewed and Open Access journal published since 1933. Koers promotes the development of Christian scholarship/science in all fields of science and publishes original (mainly reflective) research contributions with an integrated worldview as foundation. We provide a platform for authors to engage constructively and critically with Christian scholarly/scientific points of view in all fields of science.

Instructions for authors: Koers is an online open access journal at http://www.koersjournal.org.za.

Information on the instructions for authors and the types of articles received for publication, preparing a manuscript for submission to Koers and the online submission process is placed on http://www.koersjournal.org.za. We invite you to visit the journal.

The instructions for authors include information about the types of articles received for publication, preparing a manuscript for submission to Koers and the online submission process. Other relevant information about the journal's policies and the reviewing process can be found under the about section.

The journal's peer review process: Koers has a double–blinded peer review process. Manuscripts are initially examined by editorial staff and are sent by the Editor–in–Chief to two or more expert independent reviewers, either directly or by a Section Editor. The editors do not inform the reviewers of the identity of the author(s). The reviewers' identities are not disclosed to the authors either. The reviewers' comments as well as recommendations regarding an article's form may be passed on to the corresponding author and may also include suggested revisions. Manuscripts that are not approved for publication will not be returned to the submitting author in any format. Please note that AOSIS OpenJournals do not retain copies of rejected articles.

The peer review process aims to ensure that all published articles:

  • present the results of primary scientific research
  • report results that have not been published elsewhere
  • are scientifically sound
  • provide new scientific knowledge where experiments, statistics and other analyses are performed to a high technical standard and are described in sufficient detail so that another researcher will be able to reproduce the experiments described
  • provide conclusions that are presented in an appropriate manner and are supported by the data
  • are presented in an intelligible and logic manner and are written in clear and unambiguous English, Afrikaans and Dutch
  • meet all applicable research standards with regard to the ethics of experimentation and research integrity
  • adhere to appropriate reporting guidelines and community standards for data availability.

The journal publisher, AOSIS OpenJournals, is a member of the CrossCheck plagiarism detection initiative. In the event of suspected plagiarism in submitted works CrossCheck is available to the editors of Koers to detect instances of overlapping and similar text. AOSIS OpenJournals endorses and applies the standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which promotes integrity in peer–reviewed research publications.

Form and preparation

Manuscript format and layout: Follow this link for full details: Original research

  • Original research articles: These need to be reports on complete, comprehensive pieces of original research within the focus and scope of the journal. (Maximum 7000 words; 60 references.)
  • Review articles: Need to inform a broad readership about fields in which there have been recent, important advances of immense, fundamental importance and highlight unresolved questions and future directions. Standard headings are not always appropriate, but the review should have clear subheadings to provide order to the manuscript (between 2500–4000 words with a maximum of 40 references; abstract required).
  • Book reviews: The book reviews are normally requested by the editor or book review editor on any books relevant to aspects of the journal focus and scope. Please contact the editor if you would like to suggest a review or book for consideration.
  • References: Begin the reference list on a separate page. Koers uses the Harvard referencing style, details of which can be downloaded from the journal website. Note: no other style will be permitted.
