The Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe is a publication of the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. The Academy formerly published one scientific journal entitled Tydskrif vir Wetenskap en Kuns which covered the natural sciences and the humanities. In 1961 it was decided to publish two separate journals, respectively for the natural sciences and the humanities. This led to the founding of the Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe in 1961.

The Journal of Humanities/ Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe focuses on publishing original research and review articles in the fields of theology, languages, art and culture, social, economic and educational sciences on theoretical, applied or comparative aspects of African literatures and cultural practices, as well as book reviews, chronicles and poems

The parallel titles of the journal are Tijdschrift voor de Geesteswetenskappen / Zeitschrift für die Geisteswissenschaften / Journal of Humanities.

The journal is published 4 times per year, in March, June, September and December.

Its abbreviated title is Tydskr. geesteswet., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.
