Abstract

MEYER, Josua P.  and  GREYVENSTEIN, Gideon P.. Die verhitting van swembaddens in Suid-Afrika: 'n Tegno-ekonomiese analise tussen hittepompe en sonverhitting. R&D j. (Matieland, Online) [online]. 1991, vol.7, pp.26-31. ISSN 2309-8988.

The heating of swimming pools in South Africa is investigated. A techno-economic comparison is made between heat pumps and solar heating. In the investigation the heat losses from different pool sizes are determined, on the basis of which, the size and cost of a heat pump or solar system for a specific swimming pool size may be determined. Hence the life-cycle cost of a heat pump heating system is calculated and compared with that of a solar heating system. This difference is calculated for all the main centres in South Africa for various conditions. It is concluded that the economical appeal of heat pumps over solar heating systems is a function of many variables.
