Abstract

SAYERS, A.T.  and  VAN ZYL, H.L.. Celerity and magnitude of pressure surges in rectangular section pipes and conduits. R&D j. (Matieland, Online) [online]. 1994, vol.10, pp.25-30. ISSN 2309-8988.

Rectangular section pipes are being increasingly used by industry. This paper describes the determination of the celerity and magnitude of pressure surges in rectangular cross-section steel and aluminium pipes for the long side to wall thickness ratio 9 < x/t < 30. The results are compared with analytical equations for the celerity which take account of pipe wall shear, bending, tension and Poisson's ratio. The wave celerity decreases the more the pipe cross-sectional area departs from square.
