Abstract

SCHUTTE, GJ (Gerrit). Dear Cornelis! Letters from Johanna van Warmelo and Mrs. Marie M.E. van Warmelo-Maré to Mr. Cornelis Beelaerts van Blokland. Tydskr. geesteswet. [online]. 2023, vol.63, n.4, pp.1008-1029. ISSN 2224-7912.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/2224-7912/2023/v63n4a14.

Jhr.dr. Cornelis Beelaerts van Blokland (1873-1948), son of envoy of the South African Republic Jhr.mr. G.J.Th. Beelaerts van Blokland, went to school in Pretoriafrom 1884 to 1886 and worked there from 1896 to 1897. He was friends with the Van Warmelo family. He maintained correspondence with both the daughter Johanna van Warmelo and her mother Marie van Warmelo-Maré. Johanna is a well-known diarist, her letters provide interesting additions to this and provide different emphases. At least as interesting are her mother's letters, especially about their social and psychological post-war trauma. The letters were recently discovered in the archive of C. Beelaerts van Blokland.

Keywords : Cornelis Beelaerts van Blokland; Johanna van Warmelo; Marie van Warmelo-Maré; Anglo-Boer War; post-war traumata.
