In the current business environment there is a high chance of an information security incident occurring, largely due to the ever-increasing reliance on information technologies. This threat is resulting in a change in legislature regarding the protection of information. Measures and procedures therefore need to be implemented at a strategic level within an organisation to counter the information security threats. The paper descirbes various components of strategic management of information security with an emphasis on the South African context, and disucsses how effective strategic information security and a corporate culture of information security will enhance competitive advantage in the South African and global business environments.
