ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 

Basic Information

The South African Journal of Animal Science, published by the South African Society of Animal Science (previously the South African Society of Animal Production), is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that welcomes submissions from scientists from all regions of the world on all matters germane to the science of animal production, dealing with livestock species as well as pertinent aspects of research on companion animals and aquatic and wildlife species. The main disciplines covered are nutrition, genetics, physiology and production aspects of animal products. Papers dealing with sociological aspects of well–defined livestock production systems are also invited, providing they are scientific by nature and have been carried out in a systematic way.

The South African Journal of Animal Scienceis ISI Rated (Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science Impact factor), with a Clarivate (Journal Citation Reports) Impact Factor (2024) of 0.6 (Q4 of subject category) and a Scopus CiteScore (2024) of 1.4.

Copyright for articles published in the South African Journal of Animal Science remains with the author(s), and articles published in the journal are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Deed license. This allows others to copy, distribute, and adapt the work, provided proper attribution is given to the original author. The average turnaround time for article consolidation is 84 days, the average overall journal rejection rate is 62%, and 93% of this is desk–rejection (data as of 30 June 2025).

As of January 2025, one volume is published per year with 12 issues, published monthly.
