    EDITORIAL

    From the Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to Historia, 69, 2, 2024. Historia is accessible via the University of Pretoria's Open Journals Platform and SciELO, and is also searchable via Sabinet. We have moved our article submission facility to the University of Pretoria's journal management platform and are decommissioning our Gmail account. To submit articles, please visit https://upjournals.up.ac.za/index.php/historia/about/submissions. As usual, we rely on page fee charges to ensure the sustainability of the journal. The maximum page fee charges are clearly stated on our website (https://hgsa.co.za/historia/) and all fees received go towards journal production, including layout, copy editing, and a myriad of other tasks.

NASA's next Biennial Conference is to be hosted by Sol Plaatje University (SUP) in Kimberley, Northern Cape, from 18-20 June 2025. The theme is 'Heritage, History and Historiography: From the Local to the Regional and Continental', and members of the Historia team will be in attendance. Abstracts (200 words maximum), together with affiliation and all contact details, should be submitted to the following email address: NASA2025@spu.ac.za or to the Conference organisers, who are Dr Cobus Rademeyer cobus.rademeyer@spu.ac.za and Dr Karthi Gopalan karthigasen.gopalan@spu.ac.za. For the 'Call for Papers', go to https://hgsa.co.za/hasa2025//. We welcome proposals for themed issues of Historia arising from conference panels.

In this issue, Charmaine Modisane, using a case study of Diepkloof Reformatory School, examines Alan Paton's efforts towards turning a prison into a school from 1935 to 1948, and Graeme Wesley Plint gives us a socio-statistical analysis of the musketry results of the Cape Province Cadet Corps between 1941 and 1960. Also in this issue is Lazlo Passemiers's account of Nana Mahomo's contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle.

The issue also includes book reviews covering some of the latest publications on South African, Namibian and Zimbabwean history. Alosi S. Mlambo reviews Nenning Melber's The Long Shadow of German Colonialism and Arianna Lissoni reviews Marion Sparg's Guilty and Proud: An MK Soldier's Memoir of Exile, Prison and Freedom. In addition, Mandla J. Radebe examines the new publication on the role of struggle stalwart, Ronnie Kasrils. Then follows the Sharon Mer7 review of Sandra Swart's, The Lion's Historian: Africa's Animal Past. In addition, Terence Tapiwa Muzorewa reviews Victor Muchineripi Gwande's Manufacturing in Colonial Zimbabwe, 1890-1979 and Thula Simpson reviews Neil Roos's Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society: Social Histories of Accommodation. The final contribution in the review section is Suryakanthie Chetty's consideration of David Boucher and Bongani Ngqulunga's edited collection, Reappraising the Life and Legacy of Jan Smuts.

I wish to thank the editorial team and the reviewers who made this issue possible.

    Clement Masakure, November 2024
